10 epic road trips in the world to take once in your lifetime

With the gas prices coming down, there cannot be a better time to plan your next road trip. But how do you decide on which one to take? We have compiled a list of 10 ultimate road trips to help you decide on your next exciting road trip behind the wheels!


A road trip on the Pacific Coast Highway along the spectacular Pacific is the quintessential American road trip. A drive through this 1055 kilometers (655 miles) scenic highway makes you a witness to sweeping beaches, stunning coastal villages, untouched natural beauty and wine making districts.

It is recommend to do this from North to South as you will be able to be able to see the ocean from the side of the road. Go everywhere in between San Francisco and San Diego including Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the National Parks. Do set aside 15 days at a minimum if you want to cover everything.


Extending from Mosel bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern cape, this 300 kilometers (186 miles) scenic route has striking coastline and exotic beaches on one side and vineyards and incredible mountains on the other side. Along the way, you also get to witness some amazing indigenous forests, golf courses by the coast and some of the most protected marine and wildlife areas of South Africa.

With such diverse range of things to do here, do plan for 5 days for this route to also experience nature trails, hikes and scuba diving.

The 350 kilometers (220 miles) route between Fussen and Wurzburg in Bavaria, Germany connects a number of picturesque towns and fairy tale castles. A marketing gimmick post world war in the 1950s to boost the tourism resulted in this old trade route in Bavaria to be named as Romantic Road.

Rent a car for this drive and prefer to travel in late September or early October so as to be able to attend Oktoberfest in Munich. Start from Fussen with the fairy tale Neuschwanstein Castle and travel north to Wurzburg. Other recommended pitstops are the walled towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbuehl and Noerdlingen.


With vineyards, whales, adrenaline rush activities, rugged coastline, seaside villages, glacier-cut fiords, national parks and Mount Cook, its hard not to be awestruck driving through New Zealand's South Island circuit.
You can start from Christchurch and make a circle back either clockwise or anti-clockwise. Do plan for 2 weeks to make the most of this driving experience.


Driving through one of the highest motorable roads of the world is reason enough to go for this road trip. Snow clad mountains, colorful monasteries, breathtaking scenery and the unpredictable weather makes this one of the most thrilling road trips.

Plan your trip in between June to September when the Rohtang Pass is open and also the climate is better. Do plan on spending 7 days and take the route from Leh to Manali for better acclimatization.


Considered to be one of the most scenic coastal routes, this 243 kilometers (151 miles) stretch of road between the Torquay and Allansford in Victoria is dedicated to the soldiers who died in World War 1. Providing a diverse range of things to do from adventure activities to cultural and arts heritage, the Great Ocean Road has something for everyone.
 The limestone stack formation 12 apostles is the major attraction of this road trip. The calm seaside towns, the Great Ocean Walk and the rainforests are also recommended stops for this road trip. Plan on spending 5 days on this amazing coastal drive.


This 2500 kilometers (1550 miles) wild and culturally enriching coastal route is a tourism trail in the west coast of Ireland. Experience the untamed west coast, stunning countryside, ancient monuments, exotic islands and fascinating villages in this ideal driving territory. With 157 marked 'Discovery Points' on this route, there is never a dull moment in this road trip.
Plan to spend atleast a week on this magical route to allow yourself plenty of time to get close to the spectacular scenery and experience the innumerable activities here.


This officially promoted 500 miles loop of scenic coastal route along the north coast of Scotland is Scotland's answer to the iconic Route 66. It links spectacular natural heritage, towering munros, fairy tale castles, exotic beaches and impressive coastal and mountain scenery.

Plan on spending a minimum of 5 days to explore this extraordinary route. Start at Inverness and choose the route and the style that best works for you.


If you are looking for an offbeat adventure road trip, then this one is for you! Driving for hours every day across vast stretches of sand dunes, caves, gorges and cliffs, this one  is not your regular road trip.

You get to drive in a cool looking offbeat van and the best part of the trip is the experience to stay at the traditional Ger camps with Mongolian nomads. The hike at the Gobi Desert National Park is just one of the numerous reasons as to why you should do this road trip once. A minimum of 1 week will do justice to this exciting road trip.


The Ring Road encircles the entire island country and connects almost all the major attractions in Iceland. Driving past active volcanoes, stunning waterfalls, geothermal areas, sparkling rainbows, blue icebergs and the northern lights, the Ring Road trip trip is an experience that is unforgettable.

You should plan for atleast a week for this drive considering you may be getting down the car every 10 minutes to take a picture. The months of July and August will be the best for the road trip as these months have the longest period of sunlight.
